Spa Academy Askern

Reading Books

Reading is a cornerstone of everything we do at Spa Academy Askern.

By Friday, all pupils will be coming home with two reading books - their school book and library book. Pupils will not bring home their reading book until Friday, so pupils can be reassessed and allocated an accurate reading band that allows them to practise and challenge themselves independently.

It is Spa Academy's expectation that pupils should read at least three times at home each week.

What are the two books that pupils bring home?

School Book

Pupils will bring home a reading book. For pupils that are accessing phonics interventions, this will be a Read, Write, Inc. book that they are familiar with and have been taught the sounds that are used. Rereading books is important for fluency and practise.

For all other pupils, they will bring home a numbered book (for example, 4.3, 3.7 or 6.8). Pupils are assessed regularly to give them a book band that is a suitable level of challenge.

Library Book

Pupils will also bring home a library book. This is chosen, by pupils, from our fantastic National Literacy Trust Flagship Library that sits at the heart of our school. Pupils have access to a wide range of high-quality literature. All of these books are also numbered, so that pupils can see if a book would be easy/hard for them but pupils can choose any book from the library.
